DMC geometry fabric

When I am not in a hurry, I like to go to work on public transport. It means half an hour with a good book before the working day begins. I always savour it...

Some weeks ago, on the way to work, I finished a nice novel by Elsa Chabrol, "L'heure de Juliette". Having lived happily in France for several years, I loved reading the stories of the 10 inhabitants of this imaginary (but not so much!!) miniature village in the Cévennes. Problem was, I finished the novel on my way to work, and had nothing to read on my way back home... So I stopped at the newsagent and tumbled on an interesting stitching magazine, which kept me good company all the way home. Among other things, it featured a couple of projects stitched on this Geometry fabric (DMC). I had already met this name, in a free chart I had picked up in a haberdashery shop, before realizing it required a special fabric that (so typical!) the shop itself did not stock...

This time I decided I would find the fabric, and bought it from a web shop. It arrived and I must say it looks very elegant, soft, the right "type" for pouches or cushions. Only, I hadn't a clue how to stitch on it!! The magazine said very little on the stitching technique. And the chart I picked up at the shop made me no wiser. So the fabric has been sitting in my stash for a while.

Last sunday I decided it was time I did something of it, and tried my chart... the result just did not seem right!! So I paged through the magazine again and found the trick!! You don't pierce the fabric but just slide your needle beneath the threads of the fabric (see photo). And there it goes. So simple!!

It is very reminiscent of swedish weave, or more basically sort of running stitches. It's certainly a very quick way to stitch as it uses Perlé n.5. And the back is certainly neat... but... not sure I really like it. 

Well, as for now, I finished my small scented pouch. And will probably try another design, sooner or later!

Quando non vado di fretta, mi piace andare al lavoro con i mezzi pubblici. Mi garantisce una mezz'ora buona di lettura, prima di iniziare la giornata. Me la gusto sempre...
Alcune settimane fa, andando al lavoro, ho finito di leggere un bel romanzo di Elsa Chabrol, "La sposa conveniente". Avendo vissuto in Francia per diversi anni (e trovandomi molto bene!), mi sono divertita a leggere le storie dei 10 abitanti di questo immaginario (ma neanche troppo!) villaggio in miniatura nella Cévennes. Il problema era, che ho finito il romanzo andando a lavorare, per cui non avrei avuto niente da leggere al ritorno...  

Così mi sono fermata in edicola e mi è caduto l'occhio su una rivista di ricamo, che mi ha poi tenuto buona compagnia fino a casa. Tra le altre cose, presentava un paio di progetti lavorati su tessuto Geometry (DMC). Avevo già incontrato questo nome, in uno schema che mi avevano regalato in una merceria, che però non aveva (tipico, vero?) la stoffa su cui ricamarlo...
Questa volta ho deciso di cercare il tessuto, e ho trovato un rivenditore sul web. Ne ho comprato un bel pezzetto e me lo sono rimirato quando è arrivato. E' una tela molto elegante, morbida, con la "consistenza" giusta per sacchettini o cuscini. Però, non avevo la più pallida idea di come ci si ricama sopra! La rivista diceva molto poco sulla tecnica. E lo schema della merceria ancora meno. Così Geometry è rimasta lì per un po '.
Domenica sera ho deciso che era giunto il momento di provare, e ho preso in mano schema, filo e tela... ma il risultato proprio non andava! Così sono tornata a sfogliare la rivista e ho trovato il trucco! Non si deve forare il tessuto, ma basta lasciare scivolare l'ago sotto i fili della trama (vedi foto). Et voila. Era così semplice!

Ricorda molto il punto filza, ed è certamente un modo molto veloce da ricamare, tra l'altro usa un grosso Perlé n.5. E il dietro del ricamo è sicuramente perfetto... ma ... non sono sicura mi piaccia molto. Comunque, per cominciare, ho finito il mio piccolo sacchetto profumato. E prima o poi tenterò un altro progetto!

Did you guess what I had chosen for the white linen? 

Well, here it is. Quick and easy! And it's going to replace the old bag I have been using for storing my mascara and eye-pencils. 

The design is from a lovely French book called "Blanc: Broderie traditionnelle au point de croix" by Agnès Delage-Clavet and Anne Sophier-Fournel. I bought it some years ago while on holidays in Bourgogne: I was captured by the fact that the book included a couple of skeins of thread and some linen, which would have allowed me to get started at once. It's a great little book, all designs are stitched in white on rustic linen or in brownish shade on white linen. A pleasure to stitch! 

Indovinato il disegno che avevo scelto per il lino bianco? Beh, eccolo qui. Facile e veloce! E la nuova bustina andrà a sostituire quella un po' usurata che usavo  per il mascara e le mie matite per il trucco. 

Lo schema viene da un bel libro francese che si chiama "Blanc: Broderie traditionnelle au point de croix" di Agnès Delage-Clavet e Anne Sophier-Fournel. L'avevo comprato alcuni anni fa durante una vacanza in Borgogna: mi aveva colpito il fatto che al libro erano accluse un paio di matassine di filo e un quadrato di lino, l'occorrente per iniziare subito a ricamare. E' un libro delizioso, tutti i disegni sono ricamati in bianco su lino rustico o in marrone su lino bianco. Piacevolissimi!

Linen & more linen

A generous friend from the UK sent me a most lovely Jane Austen bookazine yesterday. So last night I kept thinking about laces, and linens, and muslins...

I am afraid Mr Tilney would be very critical about the linen band I bought last week. It is certainly very pretty but it's a pain to stitch! and very likely, it will not wash well...

I am joking: the linen is lovely, but I think it has been woven using some old-fashioned loom, so it's really irregular, which makes counting so difficult! Well, even if I struggled to stitch on it, I am quite pleased with the result so far. Tonight I hope to start stitching on the white linen (much easier, as it's a more basic 28ct linen!!) and I think it will not be difficult for a Janeite to guess the design I have chosen to suit the botton part of the fabric.

Not a Janeite? well, just watch this space then...

Ieri una amica generosa che vive in Gran Bretagna mi ha mandato una bellissima rivista con uno speciale su Jane Austen. Così ieri sera ho cominciato a pensare a pizzi, lino e mussola. Temo che il signor Tilney avrebbe espresso un giudizio molto critico sulla striscia di lino che ho comprato la scorsa settimana. Il lino è sicuramente molto bello, ma ... è faticosissimo da ricamare!! E molto probabilmente, si rovinerà lavandolo...
Sto scherzando: il lino è bello, ma probabilmente è stato tessuto utilizzando i vecchi telai, quindi la trama è davvero irregolare, e contare gli spazi non è affatto facile. Comunque, anche se ho faticato, sono abbastanza soddisfatta del risultato per ora. E questa sasera spero di iniziare a ricamare sul lino bianco (molto più facile, è un lino più "moderno"!). Sono certa che gli amanti di Jane Austen non avranno difficoltà a indovinare il disegno che ho scelto per la parte inferiore del tessuto. E gli altri... beh, tenete d'occhio questo spazio!

berlingot-mania

A berlingot always bring back fond memories for me. Milk came in triangular packages when I was a child. I must have been 5 or 6 years old, and a very busy child I was... Guess my parents realized that the best way to spend a quiet evening was to make sure I had spent a very active afternoon, so I joined this "young gymnasts" group. I used to love it: we could jump and run as much as we wished, and the teachers would not complain, on the contrary they seemed to be pretty happy with it. When my Mum collected me at the end of the class I was starving of course, so we used to stop at a small dairy for a quick snack. I remember I usually had a berlingot of milk and a licorice roll. Appalling combination I know, but I liked it.

I still love licorice rolls... but, as I no longer like milk, I have found another sort of berlingot I adore! Here is my last one, it has a potpourri filling and will probably be hanging in the wardrobe soon. 

I am not much of a designer, but these little cuties are surprisinlgy easy to chart so I usually make my own patterns. Geometrical borders work very well, and here is the one I used. Numbers refer to DMC threads.

Un "berlingot" mi suscita sempre bei ricordi. Forse qualcuno se lo ricorda, ma diversi anni fa queste piccole confezioni triangolari erano usate per il latte. Avrò avuto 5 o 6 anni, ed ero una bimba molto attiva... Sicuramente i miei avranno pensato che il modo migliore per trascorrere una serata tranquilla fosse quello di assicurarsi che io trascorressi un pomeriggio molto movimentato... e così mi iscrissero a un corso di ginnastica per bambini. Mi piaceva moltissimo: potevamo saltare e correre quanto volevamo, e gli insegnanti non si lamentavano, al contrario sembravano esserne felici. Quando mia mamma veniva a prendermi a fine lezione, ovviamente morivo di fame. E così ci fermavamo sempre in questa piccola latteria lungo la strada per fare merenda. Mi ricordo che volevo latte (un berlingot naturalmente!) e un rotolo di liquirizia. Combinazione agghiacciante, lo ammetto, ma era la mia preferita! 

Amo ancora la liquirizia ... ma, siccome non sono più così amante del latte, ho trovato un altro tipo di berlingot ami piace! Ecco l'ultimo che ho cucito, ha del pot-pourri all'interno e finirà appeso nel guardaroba. 

Non valgo molto come designer, ma questi piccoli triangolini sono sorprendentemente facili da creare, quindi di solito mi preparo da sola gli schemi. I disegni geometrici funzionano molto bene, per cui ecco la griglia che ho creato per il berlingot della foto. I numeri dei colori si riferiscono ai filati DMC.

As a child, I was of the 'curious kind'. Why the sky is blue, who puts salt into seawater, how does the voice travel along the telephone cables... well, you got the idea!

I have not in the least changed. And I just adore the internet, as you can get plenty of answers there, if you just start looking.

Last night I was chatting to the lady from the haberdashery shop and she was saying linen works much better than aida. Well, she was about to sell me some linen bands, but I quite agreed with her anyway. I prefer linen too, as I think it allows for a more traditional form of stitching. But, no doubt aida is much easier to work with, and stitching on aida is definitely more relaxing!

The mind plays funny tricks at times, but I woke up this morning wondering about aida cloth. Linen is a traditional fabric: older sampler are stitched on linen or silk, and there is a lot of free hand embrodery worked on plain cotton, so I said to myself, aida must be a fairly recent fabric. And here the web has been great help! After a couple of unsuccessful trips (wikipedia disappointed me here!), I found myself browsing the Zweigart website (http://www.zweigart.com/) and got the first of my answers. Zweigart produced the first Aida cloth in 1890! I kept searching, as this was not enough, and found more. Looks like Aida was firstly named "Java Cloth" or “Fancy Oatmeal” in english and "Toile Colbert" in french. That's pretty interesting, and confusing, as in some of the textile dictionaries I have browsed (yes, they exist!!) they describe Toile Colbert as a woolen canvas or loosely woven cotton that was used for embroidery around the 19th century. And then there was Basket Cloth (or Connaught Cloth), which is also supposed to have been similar to Aida.

Wow! Looks like by the time Zweigart finally produced Aida there were various similar fabric around, aimed at making stitchers' life easier compared to the finer linen cloths! 

Where did Aida got its name from then? A bit more of searching and the more plausible answer I found out there was also the most logical one: commercial reasons. Whatever the first name the fabric was given, by the turn of the century it became Aida. The first performance of Verdi's Aida dates back to 1871, and as the opera was a big success at the time, it's plausible that someone thought that naming the fabric Aida might boost sales.

For someone whose family comes from an area very close to Verdi's hometown, it's a lovely coincidence!

Da bambina, ero del tipo 'curioso'. Perchè il cielo è blu, chi mette il sale nell'acqua di mare, come fa la voce a scorrere lungo i cavi telefonici ... beh, ho reso l'idea! Non sono cambiata. E adoro internet, perchè permette di trovare un sacco di risposte, se solo si ha la pazienza di cercare! 

Ieri chiacchieravo con la proprietaria della merceria e la signora mi tesseva le lodi del lino rispetto all'aida. E' vero che mi stava vendendo del lino, ma ero abbastanza d'accordo con lei. Preferisco il lino, perchè ha questo "retrogusto" antico, insomma, fa pensare subito al ricamo secondo tradizione. Ma è anche vero che l'aida è molto più facile da lavorare, e ricamare su tela aida è indiscutibilmente più rilassante!

La mente gioca strani scherzi a volte, e mi sono svegliata stamattina pensando alla tela aida. Il lino è un tessuto tradizionale: i vecchi sampler sono cuciti su lino o seta, e molto ricamo a mano libera è lavorato su cotone, per cui immagino che l'aida sia un'invenzione recente. E qui il web è stato di grande aiuto!  

Dopo un paio di giri infruttuosi (wikipedia mi ha deluso stavolta!), mi sono trovata a navigare sul sito della Zweigart (http://www.zweigart.com/) e ho ottenuto la prima delle mie risposte. Zweigart ha prodotto per la prima volta la tela Aida nel 1890! Ho continuato a cercare, perché non mi bastava, e ho trovato di più. Sembra che la tela Aida prima si chiamasse "Java Cloth" o "Fancy Oatmeal" in inglese e "Toile Colbert" in francese. Interessante, ma anche strano perchè in alcuni dei dizionari di tessuti (eh si, ne esistono!!) la Toile Colbert è descritta come un canovaccio di lana o di cotone a trama rada, usato per il ricamo in Francia intorno al 19° secolo. E poi ci sarebbe il Basket Cloth (o Connaught Cloth), ancora simile all'Aida... Wow! Sembra che nel periodo in cui la Zweigart ha commercializzato la prima Aida ci fossero vari tessuti simili in giro, destinati a rendere la vita più facile alle ricamatrici... Un bel cambio rispetto alla trama fine del lino!

Ma mi restava una curiosità... Da dove ha preso nome l'Aida? Un altro po' di caccia al tesoro e la risposta più plausibile che ho trovato era anche la più logica: ragioni commerciali. Qualunque fosse il nome originale del tessuto, alla fine del 19° secolo è diventato Aida. La prima rappresentazione dell' Aida di Verdi risale al 1871, e siccome l'opera ebbe subito un grande successo, forse qualcuno pensò che dare il suo nome alla tela avrebbe facilitato le vendite.

Per una come me, la cui famiglia proviene da una zona molto vicina alla città natale di Verdi, beh... una bella coincidenza!

I did not intend to shop for my stash today, but could not resist these lovely linen bands. I am afraid the photo doesn't show the details properly, and it's a shame as the linen is so beautiful. I still don't know what to do with them but I am pretty sure they will be put to good use very soon. 

The rustic linen band would look very well with some greenish or lavender fabric, and matching hand-dyed threads. The larger yellowish one would be great for a couple of scented sachets, it's not high-count linen, which should work well for the purpose. Can't wait to get started, just need to find the proper charts now! 

Non avevo intenzione di fare acquisti e aumentare ancora le mie "scorte", ma non ho saputo resistere a queste due bande in lino tessuto secondo tradizione! Temo che la foto non mostri bene la trama ed è un peccato perchè è un lino stupendo. Non so ancora cosa diventeranno ma sono certa che ne farò buon uso!

La striscia in lino rustico dovrebbe stare benissimo applicata su una stoffa sul verde o color lavanda, magari ricamata con filati tinti a mano. La banda più larga sembra perfetta per un paio di sacchettini profuma-biancheria. La trama è larga e dovrebbe "funzionare". Non vedo l'ora di iniziare, devo solo trovare lo schema adatto!!

This is my first post and my first blog ever, an entirely new experience for me... wow, I like this feeling!
Generally speaking, I am not an artistic person. My few attempts at painting never yielded to something that anyone in their right minds would hang on their wall. I am not in the least musical, and although I have been a "slender, agile and graceful" teenager (according to my teacher's records), I never made it to the top list of my ballet school.
I have never been good at crafts either. My Nan tried to teach me crochet when I was a kid, but gave up after realizing how good I was at making knots. My Mum had to finish my first embroidery kit at school, else I would have been the only kid in my class unable to complete her bucolic springtime assignment of a small daisy-spotted lawn. My Aunt, a clever seamstress, looked in horror at my attempts of a hem when I decided I could sew myself a skirt.
So why a blog about handicraft items? Well, I am still no good at painting and music, and I have certainly not made a career in ballet. But, some 5 or 6 years ago I discovered that counted embroidery IS for dummies. And, before I knew it I had also taught myself to crochet, obtaining the best of the results: I enjoy it! Then came hardanger... and who knows, I may also give a try to free hand embroidery next! 

The more I got involved in these (ok, let's say it) old-fashioned hobbies, the more I realized that they fit perfectly even in our 21th century lives, by continuing a tradition of course, but also by bringing some creative thinking into everyday activities, and introducing a different pace in an otherwise tight schedule. Not bad when you come to think about it!
I still consider myself a beginner, but I thought it was well time I started sharing my pleasure in seeing a work-in-progress becoming something unique. 

And here I am... well, one has to start somewhere!  

Questo è il mio primo post e il mio primo blog in assoluto, un'esperienza completamente nuova per me ... wow, che bella sensazione!
Non sono un'artista. I miei pochi tentativi con la pittura non hanno mai prodotto qualcosa che una persona sana di mente appenderebbe al muro. E non va meglio con la musica... e anche se sono stata un'adolescente "snella, agile ed aggraziata" (secondo la mia insegnante), non sono mai stata la prima della classe alla scuola di danza.
Non sono mai stata nemmeno molto brava nelle attività manuali. Mia nonna ha cercato di insegnarmi l'uncinetto quando ero bambina, ma ha rinunciato dopo aver realizzato quanto fossi brava a fare i nodi. Mia mamma ha dovuto finire il mio primo kit di ricamo a scuola, altrimenti sarei stata l'unica alunna della mia classe a non aver finito quel prato coperto di margherite. Mia zia, eccellente sarta, ha guardato con orrore i miei tentativi di un orlo, quando ho deciso di farmi una gonna.
Allora perché un blog sulla bellezza delle cose fatte a mano? Beh, sono ancora un disastro con la pittura e la musica, e sicuramente non ho fatto carriera nel balletto. Ma, circa 5 o 6 anni fa, ho scoperto che il ricamo a punto croce è davvero per tutti. E, prima di accorgermene, avevo imparato a lavorare all'uncinetto, ottenendo il migliore dei risultati: mi diverte! Poi è arrivato l'hardanger ... e chissà, un domani potrei anche provare col ricamo a mano libera! 

Più mi appassionavo a questi hobby (ok, diciamolo) un po' vecchio stile, e più mi rendevo conto che si adattano perfettamente anche alla vita nel ventunesimo secolo, perchè se è vero che aiutano a conservare la tradizione, e ancora più vero che permettono di portare un po' di creatività nelle azioni di tutti i giorni, introducendo un ritmo diverso in un mondo che va sempre troppo di corsa. Non male quando ci si pensa!
Mi considero ancora un principiante, ma ho pensato che fosse comunque arrivato il momento di condividere il mio piacere nel vedere un progetto diventare qualcosa di unico. In fondo, da qualche parte si deve pur cominciare!!
